On April 25, Nepal suffered a devastating 7.8 magnitude earthquake. The global Red Cross network, led by the Nepal Red Cross, has mounted an international response to provide emergency humanitarian assistance to the areas affected by this disaster. The American Red Cross is working closely with the Nepal Red Cross to coordinate relief efforts and additional support.
The Red Cross has approximately 19,000 relief kits available in Nepal which includes clothing, kitchen sets, tarpaulins, mosquito nets and personal hygiene items. The Red Cross is activating its logistics systems in Kuala Lumpur and Dubai to mobilize additional relief materials in the coming days.
The American Red Cross has been working with the Nepal Red Cross since 1999 by supporting both disaster relief and disaster preparedness programming. These programs have focused on training community-level volunteers in first response. The American Red Cross has also supported school-based Disaster Risk Reduction programming in Nepal which trained students, teachers, and community members on disaster preparedness and first aid.
