Red Cross Calls For Wide Variety Of Donors To Meet Blood Demands

Many people make New Year’s resolutions. A little over a month into the New Year, some resolutions may now be flying out the window. The American Red Cross is offering a way to still make good on some of those promises. If you made a pledge to do something good for other people in 2015, the Red Cross wants to remind you that donating blood saves millions of lives, and a single donation can save up to 3 patients alone.

Bad weather conditions and the flu virus are keeping many regular donors from getting to their local blood drives. There is not only a lack of blood, but a lack of variation among blood types. Having a wide variety of blood on hand is important for hospitals to serve a diverse community like southern Nevada.

“Having a more diverse blood supply is essential,” said Scott Emmerson, Regional CEO for the American Red Cross. “Donors and patients are matched up not only by their blood type but also other markers found on the red blood cells. These markers, which make the blood unique, are usually found in donors from the same ethnicity as the patient.”

Members from all parts of the community are encouraged to donate blood. Having a wide variety of blood will help ensure southern Nevada’s hospitals are better equipped to save lives.
