American Red Cross Responds to Southern Nevada Flooding in Moapa, Logandale and Overton NV

The remnants of Hurricane Norbert created just the right weather combination to fire up monsoonal moisture in the Southern Nevada area yesterday causing heavy rains and flooding throughout the area. Residents in several communities including a portion of the Moapa Tribal land were affected by fast rising flood waters.

The Red Cross opened an evacuation shelter late Monday night where up to 50 people had gathered awaiting information on the rising Muddy River. The shelter provided a safe place to sleep and get some food for what ended up being almost a dozen shelter residents. The shelter is located at Mac Lyon Middle School – 179 S. Andersen, Overton, NV 89040.

Red Cross volunteers are on site and a second wave are en route to the area to continue damage assessment in the impacted communities. Power outages and massive washouts on state roads and low lying areas have made it difficult to gain access.

Currently there are nearly 2 dozen Red Cross workers either deployed for Shelter Management, Damage Assessment, and Bulk Distribution, and others are working at Chapter Headquarters in Bulk Distribution and Logistics.

Overnight the Red Cross has:

Served 300 meals and snacks

More than 25 clean up kits have been sent to the shelter

Provided 8 overnight stays

Served meals and water to first responders and crews

If you need help:

Residents in Moapa, Logandale and Overton NV

  • Go to the Red Cross shelter at Mac Lyon Middle School – 179 S. Andersen in Overton, NV.

Sudden power outages can be frustrating and troublesome, especially when they last a long time.

Floods are among the most frequent and costly natural disasters. Conditions that cause floods include heavy or steady rain for several hours or days that saturate the ground. Flash floods occur suddenly due to rapidly rising water along a stream or low-lying area.
