American Red Cross To Hire AmeriCorps Positions in Las Vegas, NV

 

With nearly 100 years of service in the Southern Nevada community, the American Red Cross has changed with the times to ensure care for the needs of our community. As we continue to find ways to expand our services, local opportunities to help deliver the Red Cross Mission become available.

The American Red Cross is looking to fill 3 AmeriCorps positions in our Las Vegas Region for local projects. Two of the positions will be Preparedness & Response Specialists, and the third will be a Youth Engagement Specialist.

The Preparedness and Response Project will engage two AmeriCorps members from September 2014 to July 2015 in Las Vegas, NV. AmeriCorps members will provide leadership and support to increase preparedness and response through engagement of the community in various projects in both the urban Las Vegas area and assigned rural communities. Direct service as an on-call Disaster Action Team member responding to local disasters (usually house fires) and possible deployment to a disaster beyond the local area should be expected.

The Preparedness & Response Specialists’ position will focus on the following duties:

  1. Recruit, train, and lead volunteers to increase disaster response capacity
  2. Conducting community disaster education (CDE) to ensure families are better prepared for disaster
  3. Respond directly to local and beyond local disaster events
  4. Complete one service project aligned with Red Cross mission consistent with NPRC program intentions

The Youth Engagement Project will engage one AmeriCorps member from September 2014 to July 2015 in Las Vegas, NV. AmeriCorps members will provide leadership and support to increase preparedness and response through engagement of youth in various projects in both the urban Las Vegas area and assigned rural communities. Direct service as an on-call Disaster Action Team member responding to local disasters (usually house fires) and possible deployment to a disaster beyond the local area should be expected.

The Youth Engagement Specialist’s position will focus on the following duties:

  1. The growth and development of local Red Cross Clubs within the Clark County School District, local colleges, universities, and other youth organizations that would be interested in having a Red Cross Club.
  2. Conducting community disaster education (CDE) to ensure families are better prepared for disaster
  3. Respond directly to local and beyond local disaster events
  4. Complete one service project aligned with Red Cross mission consistent with NPRC program intentions

AmeriCorps NPRC members are Full-Time and expected to serve a minimum of 1,700 hours during their 11 month term of service. Members must be available during normal business hours, Monday to Friday from September 02, 2014 to July 31, 2015. Due to the nature of our program, there will be times when members are required to serve after normal business hours including nights and weekends, sometimes on short notice.

Program Requirements

  • Willing to make an 11 month full-time commitment and complete a minimum of 1700 hours of service.
  • At least 18 years of age by the start of the program.
  • A U.S. Citizen, U.S. National or lawful permanent resident alien of the U.S.
  • High school diploma or its equivalent. College degree highly desired.
  • Current valid driver’s license and a clean driving record.
  • Lift 35 pounds. Sit and stand for long periods of time.
  • Ability to live and work in compromised environments including sleeping on a camping cot in a congregate shelter during times of deployments
  • Previous successful experience working with diverse populations.
  • At least one year of volunteer or community service experience.
  • Excellent organizational skills.
  • Excellent interpersonal, oral and written communication skills.
  • Excellent public speaking skills.
  • Ability to be deployed on national, regional and local disaster relief operations lasting three weeks.
  • Demonstrated professionalism, flexibility and initiative.
  • Team-oriented.
  • Bilingual Spanish a plus.

Program benefits: NPRC members will be provided:

  • $15,500 living stipend for 11 months of service.
  • Upon successful completion of the program, eligible for an education award in the amount of $5,645 which can be used to pay educational costs at eligible post-secondary educational institutions (including many technical schools and GI-Bill approved educational programs), as well as repay qualified student loans.
  • Health insurance provided. Childcare available if eligible.
  • Student loan deferment or forbearance
